U.S. Space Force Unveils Rare Image of X-37B Space Plane
The United States Space Force has released an unprecedented photograph of its secretive X-37B space plane, offering a rare glimpse into the vehicle’s clandestine operations. The image, shared on social media platforms, depicts the space plane against the backdrop of Earth, captured during experimental maneuvers in a highly elliptical orbit in 2024.
This unexpected disclosure provides valuable insight into the elusive space plane’s activities and capabilities, which have long been the subject of speculation among space enthusiasts and analysts alike.
The X-37B embarked on its seventh mission in December 2023, with objectives largely shrouded in secrecy. Space Force officials have confirmed that the current mission involves exploring new orbital regimes and testing advanced space domain awareness technologies. Additionally, NASA is collaborating on the mission to investigate the effects of radiation on various materials.
The space plane was launched inside SpaceX’s Heavy Falcon rocket, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing partnership between the military and commercial space sectors.
In October, the Space Force announced the execution of “aerobraking” maneuvers, a sophisticated technique that allows the X-37B to alter its orbit by passing through Earth’s upper atmosphere. This method generates drag, enabling orbital changes with minimal fuel consumption, thus extending the vehicle’s operational capabilities.
Previous X-37B missions have included experiments with solar power beaming and thermal protection systems. The space plane’s last test flight, which concluded in November 2022, set a new endurance record by remaining in orbit for 908 days.
The release of this image comes amid growing international interest in military space planes. China is currently testing its spaceplane, Shenlong, which recently made headlines for releasing mysterious objects in late 2023. Reports indicate that Shenlong has been emitting strong signals while passing over North America, raising questions about its true purpose and capabilities.
As both the X-37B and Shenlong continue their secretive missions, the space domain is increasingly becoming an arena for technological competition between global powers. With China also unveiling a reusable space shuttle for cargo transport to its Tiangong space station, the race for dominance in military space technology shows no signs of slowing down.
As the X-37B continues its current mission, space enthusiasts and defense analysts alike will be watching closely for any further glimpses into the capabilities of this enigmatic vehicle.
