Mike Johns, the affected passenger, shared his experience on LinkedIn, detailing how the robotaxi drove in circles in a parking lot instead of heading to the airport as instructed. Johns expressed concern about missing his flight and questioned whether the vehicle had been hacked, as he was unable to exit the car during the ordeal.

Despite the inconvenience, Johns eventually received a refund and managed to catch his flight. However, the incident underscores the persistent issues plaguing robotaxis, even as they become increasingly prevalent in U.S. cities.

Waymo, owned by Alphabet, has been expanding its driverless services in cities such as Los Angeles, Phoenix, and San Francisco, with plans for further growth in Austin, Miami, and Tokyo. The company faces stiff competition from other tech giants like Tesla, which is also developing autonomous taxi services.

The robotaxi industry has faced numerous challenges, including vehicles getting stuck or involved in minor accidents, often requiring human intervention to resolve issues. These growing pains were further highlighted when General Motors’ competitor Cruise ceased operations following safety incidents.
