VLC Unveils AI-Powered Subtitling and Translation at CES 2025
VideoLAN, the developer behind the popular VLC media player, has unveiled a groundbreaking AI-powered subtitling and translation feature at CES 2025. Jean-Baptiste Kempf, president of VideoLAN, demonstrated the new technology, which utilizes open-source AI models to generate and translate subtitles in real time.
The innovative feature supports over 100 languages and operates locally on users’ devices, eliminating the need for cloud services or an internet connection. VideoLAN shared a demonstration video on social media, showcasing the capabilities of this new addition to their software.
Unlike previous versions that required plug-ins, the AI subtitling and translation feature is now integrated directly into the VLC app. Built on OpenAI’s Whisper speech recognition system, it offers seamless subtitle generation and translation in real time. However, VideoLAN has not yet announced a specific release date for this feature.
This announcement comes as VideoLAN celebrates a significant milestone: 6 billion downloads of the VLC media player. Kempf noted that despite the rise of streaming services, VLC continues to see growth in active users.
Attendees at CES 2025 can experience the new AI subtitling feature firsthand at VideoLAN’s booth in Eureka Park. The company plans to provide live demonstrations throughout the event, allowing visitors to observe the technology in action.
As the media landscape continues to evolve, VLC’s latest innovation demonstrates the ongoing relevance and adaptability of traditional media players in the streaming era.
