Space tourism is about to get a lot smoother with the introduction of Space Perspective’s Neptune spacecraft. This Florida-based startup has unveiled a test capsule for its revolutionary Neptune spacecraft, set to transport passengers into the stratosphere using a giant balloon instead of traditional rockets. The company is proud to introduce the pressurized Neptune capsule as the “largest human spacecraft in operation,” second only to space stations like the ISS. This groundbreaking spacecraft is only the third commercial suborbital spacecraft ever built, following behind Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo space plane and Blue Origin’s New Shepard crew capsule.
The recently revealed test capsule, affectionately named “Excelsior” after the US Air Force space-jump project, is fully functional but awaits its final interior design, as reported by Dezeen. Taber MacCallum, co-founder of Space Perspective, expressed his excitement about the innovative spacecraft, stating, “The space capsule is like nothing the world has ever seen. We are on the cusp of a staggering shift – not only in the way we humans experience space but also in our perception of the spaceship that takes us there.”
Neptune flights are poised to carry eight passengers and a captain, aiming to “Set the record for the most people taken to the edge of space.” The company plans to conduct its initial manned test flights before the year ends, with commercial flights scheduled for the 1,750 ticket holders by 2025. Cofounder Jane Poynter highlighted the inclusive nature of the experience, stating, “If you can get on a commercial airplane, you can get on Spaceship Neptune.” This accessibility is expected to broaden the market significantly, allowing individuals who may not feel comfortable or physically able to board a rocket to still enjoy the awe-inspiring view of Earth from space.
While the spacecraft’s design and capabilities are indeed groundbreaking, Space Perspective still faces challenges in securing a hydrogen supplier for its balloon propulsion system, according to Dezeen. Despite these hurdles, the company remains determined to revolutionize space tourism and make the extraordinary experience of space travel accessible to a broader audience.
In a world where space exploration is no longer limited to trained astronauts, Space Perspective’s Neptune spacecraft represents a significant step towards democratizing access to the cosmos. With its innovative approach and inclusive philosophy, the company is poised to redefine the way we perceive space travel, offering a smoother, more awe-inspiring journey beyond our planet’s atmosphere. So buckle up, Earthlings, the future of space tourism is looking excitingly smooth and within reach.
