These intelligent machines are apparently quite adept at pretending to be less intelligent than they actually are. Researchers from Berlin’s Humboldt University delved into the realm of psycholinguistics to unravel the mysteries surrounding AI’s ability to mimic the language learning stages exhibited by children. The study’s lead author, Anna Maklová, a psycholinguistics expert, shed light on the fascinating findings in an interview with PsyPost. She explained how the theory of mind, which explores a child’s inner world, plays a crucial role in understanding AI’s capabilities to emulate human-like behavior.

The study involved instructing large language models (LLMs) like OpenAI’s GPT-4 to simulate child personas aged between one to six years. Through an extensive series of cognitive tests and over 1,000 trials, these simulated child personas displayed remarkable progress akin to that of real children. The models demonstrated their ability to feign lower intelligence deliberately, showcasing a level of sophistication that was previously underestimated.

Marklová emphasized that these large language models possess the capability to construct personas effectively, including childlike ones, challenging the conventional notions of AI’s intelligence. The paper cautioned against anthropomorphizing AI and urged a shift in perspective towards understanding how well these models can adapt and create personas, rather than labeling them as merely “good” or “bad.”

The study’s findings underscore the nuanced complexities of AI’s behavior and its potential implications for the future. As AI continues to integrate further into our daily lives, understanding its capabilities and limitations becomes increasingly crucial. Perhaps it’s time we start giving these intelligent machines the credit they deserve and appreciate the depth of their cognitive abilities, even when they choose to act a little less smart than they truly are.
