Astronomers have made a groundbreaking discovery: for the first time, they have captured an image of both a black hole and its powerful jets in one shot. The new picture shows colossal jets emanating from the black hole that look like tentacles reaching out into space.
The image was taken by astronomers using the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), which is comprised of eight telescopes located around the world that work together to capture images of celestial objects at great distances. By combining data from all eight telescopes, scientists were able to create this unprecedented view of a supermassive black hole 55 million light-years away in galaxy M87.
The EHT team also managed to measure how fast matter is traveling within these jet streams, which can reach speeds close to half the speed of light! This incredible feat has given us insight into some previously unknown aspects of our universe and its most mysterious phenomena – black holes. It’s believed that further study could help us better understand gravity itself as well as other cosmic phenomena, such as gamma-ray bursts and quasars.
