Donald Trump recently took the stage at a press conference in Florida, providing a performance that left many scratching their heads. With an increasingly disjointed manner of speaking, particularly when discussing Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate Tim Walz, Trump’s speech raised more than a few eyebrows. Known for his convoluted rhetoric, the 78-year-old candidate’s growing verbal disarray has become a topic of concern among experts.
Clinical psychologist Ben Michaelis and other specialists interviewed by STAT have noted a noticeable decline in Trump’s speech patterns over the past years. Michaelis, after analyzing recent speeches, suggested that there could be signs pointing towards forms of dementia. Adding fuel to the speculative fire, University of Texas at Austin social psychologist James Pennebaker employed statistical software to scrutinize Trump’s linguistic tendencies from 2015 to present day. Pennebaker discovered significant changes, particularly a shift towards “all-or-nothing thinking,” marked by frequent use of absolute terms like “always” and “never.”
This linguistic shift isn’t unique to Trump. President Joe Biden, who recently stepped away from the race amid escalating health concerns, has exhibited similar tendencies. It’s a curious parallel that STAT previously explored in 2017, noting that Trump’s speech had markedly deteriorated from his more articulate and eloquent days in the 1980s and 1990s. The man who once spoke with a degree of sophistication now frequently rambles and veers off into tangential, long-winded asides.
Thursday’s press conference was no exception. Trump appeared unusually tired and beaten down, prompting New Yorker contributor Jay Caspian Kang to question on X whether Trump truly wants to run for office again. Adding another layer to the intrigue, Trump survived an assassination attempt less than a month ago, and it’s plausible that trauma from this incident could be affecting his cognitive function.
Despite Biden stepping down and the growing evidence of Trump’s declining cognitive health, it appears unlikely that the Republicans will abandon their long-time figurehead. Trump’s ardent base remains steadfast, even as the signs of a less sharp mind become more apparent. Should he win the race, the man who will occupy the Oval Office will certainly be one under intense scrutiny concerning his mental acuity.
The current political landscape is as unpredictable as ever, with aging political giants showing signs of wear and tear. Whether Trump’s verbal disarray will affect his chances remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: the political theater continues to serve up an ever-evolving, if not somewhat concerning, spectacle.
