Tesla’s Cybertruck Faces Safety Concerns as Reports of Detaching Panels Emerge
Tesla’s highly anticipated Cybertruck, known for its futuristic design and innovative manufacturing techniques, is now facing serious safety concerns. Recent reports indicate that metal body panels are detaching from the vehicle at high speeds, raising questions about the truck’s design and construction methods.
The most prominent issue involves the Cybertruck’s distinctive nine-foot boomerang-shaped window trim. Unlike traditional vehicles that use bolts or welding to secure body panels, the Cybertruck relies primarily on adhesive. This unconventional approach has led to several incidents of panel detachment, posing significant safety hazards on the road.
In one alarming case, a Michigan driver reported that a panel detached from their Cybertruck while traveling at 70 mph. Similar incidents have been documented by automotive publication Road & Track, suggesting this is not an isolated occurrence.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has become involved, with at least two complaints regarding the boomerang panel filed since November 2023. Tesla’s response to these issues has drawn criticism, as the company reportedly only replaces panels after they have detached.
These concerns are not limited to the Cybertruck. The NHTSA has also been investigating broader safety issues with Tesla vehicles. An investigation found that approximately 75,000 Teslas suffer from faulty front suspension, leading to a phenomenon dubbed “whompy wheels.” This suspension issue affects various Tesla models, including the Cybertruck.
Despite multiple recalls for other issues, Tesla has yet to address the boomerang trim or suspension problems comprehensively. The company has issued seven recalls for the Cybertruck but continues to face criticism for its handling of these safety concerns.
The Cybertruck’s unique design and ongoing safety issues have contributed to its controversial reputation. As reports of detaching panels and other hazards continue to surface, drivers are being advised to exercise caution when in proximity to Cybertrucks on the road.
These safety concerns highlight the challenges inherent in pushing the boundaries of vehicle design and manufacturing. As investigations continue and more incidents are reported, Tesla may face increasing pressure to address these issues more effectively and ensure the safety of both Cybertruck occupants and other road users.
