Taiwan’s New Sea Drone: Endeavor Manta Boosts Maritime Defense Against China

Taiwan Unveils Versatile Uncrewed Surface Vessel to Bolster Defense

CSBC Corporation, Taiwan’s leading shipbuilder, has introduced the Endeavor Manta, a cutting-edge uncrewed surface vessel designed to enhance the island nation’s maritime defense capabilities. The 28-foot-long sea drone, inspired by Ukraine’s successful tactics against Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, represents a significant advancement in Taiwan’s strategy to counter potential Chinese aggression.

The Endeavor Manta boasts impressive versatility, capable of performing multiple roles including firing torpedoes and ramming targets. Its design allows for easy deployment from any port or beach in Taiwan and can be transported via commercial trucks, ensuring rapid mobilization when needed.

Key features of the vessel include its ability to serve in various capacities such as port inspection, loitering munition, drone jamming, mine-hunting, reconnaissance, and as a decoy. Additionally, the Endeavor Manta can function as a short-range air defense platform and a mothership for smaller drones. Beyond military applications, it is equipped to assist in firefighting, search and rescue operations, and emergency supply transport.

The vessel’s technical specifications are equally noteworthy. Constructed with a fiber-reinforced plastic hull and displacing approximately five tons, the Endeavor Manta can achieve a top speed of 35 knots (about 40 mph). Due to size constraints, torpedoes are mounted externally. The trimaran hull design ensures stability in choppy waters, while external cameras and sensors provide crucial situational awareness.

Control of the Endeavor Manta is maintained through 4G, satellite, and radio signals. In the event of compromised communications, the vessel is programmed to autonomously return to base or self-destruct, preventing capture by hostile forces.

This latest addition to Taiwan’s growing arsenal of sea and aerial drones comes amid rising tensions in the Taiwan Strait. The development of such unmanned technologies aligns with the US Indo-Pacific Command’s interest in innovative strategies for the region.

As Taiwan continues to resist potential Chinese annexation, the Endeavor Manta represents a significant step in the island’s ongoing efforts to modernize its defense capabilities through advanced technologies.
