SpaceX Scrubs Eighth Starship Test Flight Minutes Before Launch
SpaceX’s highly anticipated eighth flight test of its Starship spacecraft was called off just minutes before the scheduled launch on Thursday. Engineers identified potential issues with the Super Heavy booster, prompting a cautious approach to the mission.
Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, took to social media to explain the decision, citing concerns over low-ground spin start pressure. “Better to be safe than sorry,” Musk stated, emphasizing the company’s commitment to safety and reliability.
This latest delay comes on the heels of a dramatic incident during the previous Starship test flight. In that mission, the upper stage of the spacecraft exploded midair over the Caribbean, scattering debris that affected air traffic and raised concerns among residents of nearby islands. An investigation revealed that a propellant leak, caused by violent oscillations, led to engine failure and the vehicle’s self-destruction.
Despite the setback with the upper stage, the Super Heavy booster demonstrated promising performance during the last test. It successfully executed a boost back burn and managed to reignite most of its engines, returning to the launch pad using the tower’s innovative “chopstick” arms.
Looking ahead, SpaceX plans to re-attempt the previous test with several key modifications. These include enhanced ventilation in the Starship’s attic to prevent fires, changes to the fuel line, adjustments to engine thrust levels, and alterations to propellant temperatures. If successful, the upcoming test will also involve relighting engines in orbit and deploying dummy Starlink satellites.
