Space Tech Founders Pivot to Earth-Focused Climate Solutions

A new trend is emerging among climate tech entrepreneurs, as founders with backgrounds in space technology are redirecting their expertise to address pressing environmental challenges on Earth. One such company, General Galactic, exemplifies this shift, with its founders Halen Mattison and Luke Neise leveraging their experience from SpaceX and aerospace design to tackle terrestrial issues.

Initially aiming to develop reactors for Mars, General Galactic has pivoted to focus on replacing natural gas on Earth. The company has successfully created a pilot system capable of producing 2,000 liters of methane daily. Plans are underway to enhance production by replacing off-the-shelf components with proprietary designs, emphasizing supply chain control and engineering efficiency.

General Galactic’s market focus extends beyond traditional heating and energy applications. The company is targeting industries that use methane as an ingredient or process power, such as chemical and plastic manufacturing. There are also plans to explore other hydrocarbons for transportation, including jet fuel.

The startup recently secured $8 million in seed funding, led by Harpoon Ventures and Refactor Capital. With this investment, General Galactic aims to deploy its first modules by 2025, integrating them into existing infrastructure to accelerate adoption.

However, the company faces competition from startups producing green methanol, a key component in fuels and petrochemicals. Additionally, methane presents unique challenges, including high liquification temperatures and potent greenhouse gas effects. To maintain carbon neutrality claims, minimizing leaks will be crucial for General Galactic’s operations.

Despite these challenges, the potential for renewable electricity-produced methane to offer a lower carbon footprint than fossil fuels is significant. The company is also exploring opportunities in liquid fuels for aviation and maritime shipping, sectors that present substantial climate and business prospects.

As the climate tech landscape evolves, companies like General Galactic demonstrate the potential for space-inspired technologies to address Earth’s environmental concerns. This trend highlights the adaptability of tech entrepreneurs in pivoting their focus to capitalize on emerging opportunities in the fight against climate change.
