Smartwatch Giant Throws in the Towel on Wear OS

The smartwatch world has been abuzz lately with the news of Fossil’s strategic decision to exit the smartwatch business. According to Fossil’s COO Jeff Boyer, the company is shifting gears as the smartwatch landscape continues to evolve. This decision comes on the heels of the Fossil Gen 6 smartwatch facing challenges in keeping up with the latest technology, as it lags behind in Qualcomm’s portfolio. Meanwhile, the Fossil Gen 5 series relies on an even older Snapdragon Wear 3100 silicon, signaling a need for Fossil to offload its inventory of Wear OS smartwatches.

The signs of Wear OS shuttering had reportedly been communicated internally well in advance, and this move is further evidenced by at least two Fossil Exclusive retail stores offering a healthy 50% discount on select Fossil Gen 6 smartwatch models. Despite the transition, customers purchasing a Fossil Gen 6 smartwatch today can still benefit from a hardware warranty lasting one year. However, the future of OS updates for the Fossil Gen 5 lineup remains uncertain due to the processing power requirements of these updates. It’s unlikely that the older Gen 5 smartwatches will receive the same two-year update treatment as the relatively newer Gen 6 models.

The timing of Fossil’s exit from the smartwatch market is particularly unfortunate, given the recent merger of Wear OS and Tizen OS, which injected new life into the Android smartwatch ecosystem. It’s a shame to see Fossil step back just as this merger promised to revitalize the space.

Fossil’s decision also raises questions about the future of Wear OS and the broader smartwatch market. As one of the major players in the industry, Fossil’s departure may have ripple effects, potentially reshaping the competitive landscape and prompting other companies to reassess their positions in the smartwatch market.

Ultimately, Fossil’s exit from the smartwatch business underscores the rapid pace of innovation in the tech industry, where staying ahead of the curve is crucial. While Fossil bids farewell to smartwatches, the industry marches forward, offering new opportunities for other players to lead the way in shaping the future of wearable technology.
