Schwinn Revives Classic Hurricane as Affordable Electric Bike for Teens
Schwinn, the iconic American bicycle brand, has announced the revival of its popular Hurricane model from the late ’70s and early ’80s as an electric bike. The new Schwinn Hurricane Compact Electric Bike combines classic styling with modern electric features, targeting riders aged 13 and older.
Priced at $599.99, the electric Hurricane positions itself as a more affordable option in the e-bike market, undercutting competitors like Juiced Bikes and Super73. The compact design features a smaller frame and 14-inch aluminum wheels, accommodating riders up to 260 pounds.
At the heart of the new Hurricane is a 250-watt hub motor paired with a 36V 7.8Ah lithium-ion battery. The bike’s top speed is capped at 17.5mph, a safety consideration for its younger target audience. With pedal assistance, the Hurricane boasts a range of approximately 30 miles, though this can vary when using the twist throttle for non-pedaling rides, especially on steep terrain.
The electric Hurricane retains some nostalgic elements, including an oversized “moto-style” padded seat reminiscent of its predecessor. Safety features include always-on front and rear lights, while a basic LED battery indicator on the handlebars keeps riders informed of power levels.
Standard disc brakes provide stopping power, though the bike does not offer power regeneration during braking. This revival of a classic model as an electric bike represents Schwinn’s effort to blend nostalgia with modern, eco-friendly transportation solutions for a new generation of riders.
