Rivalry Intensifies in Edge AI Chip Market

The competition for edge AI chips is heating up as the ChatGPT-triggered AI hype has attracted many IC vendors. This increased interest in the market has caused startup firms to feel pressure from major IC design houses, such as MediaTek, Novatek, and Realtek. These companies are stepping up their efforts to develop more advanced AI chips that can be used in a variety of applications.

These big players have already released products or announced plans to enter this space with new offerings. For example, MediaTek recently unveiled its Helio M70 5G modem, which includes an integrated neural processing unit (NPU) designed specifically for artificial intelligence tasks on mobile devices and other connected gadgets. Similarly, Novatek launched its NT96660 processor with an embedded NPU last year while Realtek’s latest chip features a dedicated deep learning accelerator (DLA).

Startup firms must now compete against these established giants who have access to larger resources and expertise when it comes to developing cutting-edge technologies like edge AI chipsets. To stay competitive they need to focus on creating innovative solutions that offer superior performance at lower costs than those offered by their rivals if they want any chance of succeeding in this increasingly crowded marketplace.
