Rhode Island Health System Cyberattack: Personal Data at Risk as Hackers Demand Ransom

Cyberattack Threatens Personal Data of Rhode Island Residents

In a concerning development, cybercriminals have launched an attack on Rhode Island’s online system for health and human services benefits, threatening to release the personal data of state residents. The hackers have demanded a ransom, though specific details of their demands have not been disclosed.

The potential impact on Rhode Island residents is significant, with personal information at risk including names, addresses, birth dates, Social Security numbers, and banking details. Programs affected by this breach include Medicaid, SNAP, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, Childcare Assistance Program, Rhode Island Works, Long-term Services and Supports, At HOME Cost Share Program, and HealthSource RI.

In response to the security threat, the state has taken swift action by taking the RIBridges system offline. Deloitte, the system’s vendor, has confirmed a high probability of a data breach. The state government is collaborating with Experian to establish a toll-free hotline for affected residents, providing guidance on data protection and information about the breach.

Residents are strongly urged to take protective measures for their personal information. The established hotline serves as a resource for individuals seeking advice on safeguarding their data and understanding the extent of the breach.

Governor Daniel McKee addressed the severity of the situation, emphasizing the importance of resident vigilance and protective actions. “We are taking this threat seriously and working diligently to mitigate its impact,” stated Governor McKee. “I urge all Rhode Islanders to stay alert and take necessary precautions to protect their personal information.”

As the situation develops, state officials continue to work closely with cybersecurity experts to assess the full extent of the breach and implement additional security measures.
