Nintendo and The Pokémon Company Sue Palworld Developer for Patent Infringement
In a significant legal move, Nintendo and The Pokémon Company have filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Pocketpair, the developer of the popular game Palworld. The lawsuit, submitted to the Tokyo District Court on September 18, 2024, seeks an injunction against infringement and compensation for damages.
The gaming giants allege that Palworld, which has gained immense popularity since its early access release, infringes upon multiple patent rights held by Nintendo and The Pokémon Company. Pocketpair has not yet responded to requests for comment on the legal action.
Palworld, often described as “Pokémon with guns,” became a major hit in early 2024, selling over five million copies within just three days of its release. The survival and crafting game features creatures called “Pals,” which players work alongside in various activities.
However, the game has been embroiled in controversy since its launch, with critics and social media users pointing out striking similarities between some of Palworld’s monster designs and those of Pokémon. Many have suggested that certain designs in Palworld appear to be direct copies of Pokémon models.
This lawsuit marks a significant escalation in the ongoing debate surrounding Palworld’s creature designs and their resemblance to the iconic Pokémon franchise. As the legal battle unfolds, it could have far-reaching implications for the gaming industry and intellectual property rights in game design.
