NASA is set to receive a larger budget for the upcoming year, with some of that money being allocated towards developing a special spacecraft to destroy the International Space Station (ISS). The ISS has been in orbit since 1998 and has served as an invaluable platform for scientific research. However, it is now nearing its end of life and NASA must find ways to safely deorbit it before any damage can be caused by the debris.
The new spacecraft would be designed specifically for this purpose: destroying the ISS while minimizing the risk of harm from falling debris. It will likely use advanced propulsion systems, such as ion thrusters or solar sails, to reach its target efficiently and effectively. The craft may also carry specialized tools, such as robotic arms or lasers, which could help break down parts of the station into smaller pieces so they can burn up more quickly during reentry into Earth’s atmosphere.
Once developed, this new spacecraft could prove invaluable not only in retiring aging space stations but also in disposing of other large objects orbiting our planet that pose risks if left unchecked.
