Microsoft Delays Rollout of Recall Feature for Copilot Plus PCs
Microsoft has announced a further delay in the release of its Recall feature for Copilot Plus PCs, pushing the initial testing phase with Windows Insiders from October to December. The feature, designed to create screenshots of user activities, has faced multiple setbacks since its original planned launch in June, primarily due to security concerns.
The tech giant is taking additional time to overhaul Recall’s security measures, ensuring a secure user experience. Microsoft has emphasized that Recall will be an opt-in feature, allowing users the option to uninstall it if desired. The company is focusing on encrypting the Recall database and implementing Windows Hello authentication for access.
Recall utilizes local AI models on Windows 11 to capture user activities, providing an explorable timeline for users to review their PC usage history. The feature is designed to facilitate searching and retrieving information from past activities on the device.
In response to widespread misunderstandings, Microsoft has clarified that Recall is not mandatory and will only be available on Copilot Plus PCs. Confusion arose from references to Recall in Windows 11, version 24H2, leading to the spread of misinformation about the feature’s installation.
As Microsoft continues to refine Recall, the company aims to address both security and user control concerns before the December preview with Windows Insiders. This cautious approach underscores Microsoft’s commitment to delivering a secure and user-friendly feature in the evolving landscape of AI-assisted computing.
