Microsoft Phases Out Remote Desktop App: What Users Need to Know by 2025

Microsoft Announces End of Support for Remote Desktop App

Microsoft has revealed plans to discontinue support for its Remote Desktop app for Windows on May 27th, 2025. Users of Remote Desktop for Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, or Microsoft Dev Box will need to transition to the new Windows app, which was launched in September with enhanced features.

The new Windows app boasts several improvements, including multi-monitor support for an improved user experience, dynamic display resolutions for better adaptability, and easy access to cloud PCs and virtual desktops. These upgrades aim to provide users with a more seamless and efficient remote desktop experience.

As part of the transition, Microsoft will block connections via the Remote Desktop app from the Microsoft Store after the May 2025 deadline. Users must switch to the Windows app to maintain access to remote desktop services.

It’s important to note that the existing Remote Desktop Connection app will continue to be available in Windows 11. This app will remain functional until Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) support is integrated into the new Windows app, ensuring a smooth transition for users.

Industry experts speculate that this move could pave the way for Microsoft to support personal accounts in the Windows app in the future. The shift aligns with Microsoft’s broader strategy of moving Windows to the cloud, potentially enhancing AI services and digital experience roaming capabilities.

As the 2025 deadline approaches, Microsoft encourages users to familiarize themselves with the new Windows app and begin the transition process to ensure uninterrupted access to remote desktop services.
