Threads Introduces New Media Sharing Feature, Intensifying Competition with Bluesky
In the ongoing battle for former Twitter users, Meta’s Threads platform has unveiled a new feature allowing users to share photos and videos without quote posting. This move comes as Threads and Bluesky continue to vie for dominance in the microblogging space.
The latest update enables Threads users to share media content from other posts while adding their commentary, similar to a feature already available on X (formerly Twitter) for videos. However, initial reactions from users, particularly photographers, have been mixed.
Some users have expressed concerns about the lack of direct links back to original accounts when sharing media. This has raised questions about proper attribution and the potential for content to be shared without clear credit to its creators.
To use the new feature, users can long-press on a desired image to bring up a menu, and then select “Use media” to share just the image. They can then add personal comments above the image in a new thread before posting.
While the shared images do include a watermark-like credit, it does not provide a direct link back to the original account. This has led to discussions about the balance between easy content sharing and protecting creators’ rights.
As Threads continues to evolve and respond to user feedback, it remains to be seen how this new feature will impact user engagement and content sharing on the platform. The competition between Threads and Bluesky is likely to intensify as both platforms strive to attract and retain users in the post-Twitter landscape.
