Meta Unveils Plans for Premium Smart Glasses with Built-in Display
Meta, the parent company of Facebook, is reportedly developing a high-end version of its Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, codenamed Hypernova. Sources familiar with the project reveal that these new glasses are expected to feature a built-in screen and could hit the market as early as the end of this year.
The Hypernova glasses will allow users to run apps and display photos, controlled through a combination of hand gestures and capacitive touch. The screen, located on the right lens, will be visible in the lower-right quadrant and is designed to be best viewed when looking downward. The interface is said to resemble the Meta Quest interface, featuring a home screen with horizontally arranged icons.
In addition to the display upgrade, Hypernova will boast an improved camera compared to the current model and integrate an AI chatbot feature. These advanced features come at a cost, with the price range expected to fall between $1,000 and $1,400, significantly higher than the current $299 model.
Meta’s move into the premium smart glasses market positions Hypernova as a mid-tier offering, competing with products like the Rokid Glasses. However, the company is reserving its most advanced AR technology for its Orion glasses, which are still in development.
The Hypernova glasses will be accompanied by the Orion’s “neural” wristband controller, codenamed Ceres, further enhancing user interaction capabilities. Looking ahead, Meta is already planning a subsequent version, Hypernova 2, which will feature dual screens and is slated for release in 2027.
As the smart glasses market continues to evolve, Meta’s Hypernova represents a significant step forward in wearable technology, offering users a more immersive and feature-rich experience.
