Mercedes-Benz Unveils First All-Electric Popemobile for Pope Francis
In a groundbreaking move, Mercedes-Benz has introduced its first-ever all-electric popemobile for Pope Francis, marking a significant milestone in the automaker’s 90-year history of supplying vehicles to the Vatican. The new zero-emission vehicle, based on the iconic Mercedes G-Class wagon, represents a fusion of tradition and innovation in papal transportation.
The electric popemobile, designed to operate without pollution, utilizes Mercedes-Benz’s cutting-edge EV technology. This development makes Pope Francis the first pontiff to use a fully electric Mercedes-Benz for public appearances, underscoring the Vatican’s commitment to environmental stewardship.
Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Kallenius emphasized the vehicle’s symbolic importance, stating, “This popemobile exemplifies our dedication to electromobility and decarbonization.” The introduction of this eco-friendly vehicle aligns seamlessly with broader environmental and sustainability goals championed by both the Vatican and the automotive industry.
Engineered for papal duties, the electric popemobile boasts several unique features. Four individual motors, one at each wheel, power the vehicle, optimizing it for low-speed travel—ideal for events such as greeting visitors in St. Peter’s Square. Modifications include an elevated, swiveling seat for the pope, enabling him to face followers from all directions, with additional seating for two passengers behind.
This is not Pope Francis’ first encounter with zero-emission vehicles. In 2012, he received a Renault Kangoo electric van as a gift, and in 2019, he utilized a hydrogen-powered Toyota Mirai during his visit to Japan. Mercedes-Benz has also previously produced hybrid popemobiles for the pontiff.
The concept of an electric popemobile has been in consideration for several years, with proposals from various companies, including the now-defunct EV startup Fisker. The successful implementation by Mercedes-Benz could potentially inspire wider adoption of electric vehicles in religious and ceremonial contexts.
