McKinsey Veteran Joins AI Startup: Revolutionizing Large Language Model Training

McKinsey Senior Partner Departs to Lead AI Training Firm

Matthew Fitzpatrick, a senior partner at McKinsey & Company and head of its AI division QuantumBlack Labs, is set to leave the consulting giant to become CEO of Invisible Technologies, a company specializing in AI model training.

Fitzpatrick, who spent 12 years at McKinsey, played a pivotal role in developing AI software and tools for companies as the global head of QuantumBlack Labs. Under his leadership, the division created widely used tools such as Kedro, an open-source analytics and machine learning library.

In his new role at Invisible Technologies, valued at $500 million, Fitzpatrick will focus on data pre-training and post-training for large language models. He sees this as an opportunity to address the challenge many businesses face in operationalizing AI models effectively.

“Invisible is a critical yet under-the-radar AI company in the US,” Fitzpatrick stated, emphasizing the strong demand for the company’s services. However, he also stressed the importance of maintaining quality while scaling operations.

Fitzpatrick’s departure marks a significant shift for McKinsey, where he was instrumental in transforming the firm’s talent acquisition strategy. His efforts led to the integration of more engineers and employees with quantitative skills, moving beyond traditional consulting profiles.

Somesh Khanna, a former McKinsey colleague, praised Fitzpatrick’s impact, noting, “Matthew’s work allowed McKinsey to better integrate technical talent into its consulting model.”

As Fitzpatrick transitions to his new role, he aims to leverage his experience to help businesses bridge the gap between AI development and practical implementation, potentially reshaping the landscape of AI integration in corporate environments.
