Loops: New Privacy-Focused Video App Challenges TikTok with 60-Second Format

Loops, a New Short-Form Video App, Launches with Focus on Privacy and Moderation

Loops, a new short-form video app developed by Daniel Supernault, creator of Pixelfed, has officially opened for signups. The platform allows users to post 60-second looping videos, with additional features such as sound usage, video remixing, pinned profile videos, and curated comment sections currently in development.

The app, which is initially available on iOS via TestFlight and as a side-loadable Android app, enables users to categorize their videos for easier discovery. However, it currently lacks support for hashtags and mentions. Supernault has shared screenshots and screen recordings showcasing the app’s interface and functionality.

One of Loops’ distinguishing features is its approach to content moderation. The platform employs human moderators and implements a trust score system for users. Those with low trust scores will have their videos reviewed before publication, while trusted users’ content will be posted immediately.

Privacy and user ownership are central to Loops’ philosophy. The platform has committed to not selling or providing users’ videos to third-party advertisers or for AI training purposes. Additionally, Loops is working on Fediverse integration, although this feature is not yet live.

Regarding funding, Loops relies on grants, sponsorships, and donations to support its operations. The platform’s privacy policy is available for review, emphasizing transparency in its data handling practices.

As Loops enters the competitive short-form video market, its focus on user privacy, content moderation, and Fediverse integration may set it apart from established players in the field.
