Instagram’s Edits: New Video Editing App Challenges CapCut’s Throne

Instagram Unveils New Video Editing App ‘Edits’ to Rival CapCut

Instagram head Adam Mosseri has announced the launch of a new video editing app called Edits, set to compete with the now-offline CapCut, which was associated with TikTok. The app is currently available for preorder on the iOS App Store, with a scheduled release date of March 13th, 2025.

Mosseri emphasized the importance of providing creators with top-tier tools, describing Edits as a comprehensive suite of creative features that extends beyond basic video editing capabilities. The app includes dedicated tabs for inspiration and early idea tracking, along with a high-quality camera for recording.

Edits boasts an array of features designed to enhance the creative process. Users can expect comprehensive editing tools, the ability to share drafts with friends and fellow creators, and access to powerful insights for videos shared on Instagram.

One of the app’s standout features is its live insights dashboard, which offers detailed performance tracking. Creators can view breakdowns of follower and non-follower engagement, as well as metrics on how often users skip specific videos. The editing suite includes advanced tools such as green screens and video overlays, similar to features previously available on TikTok.

The timing of this announcement suggests a strategic move by Instagram to position Edits in the market, particularly in light of recent uncertainties surrounding TikTok and its associated editing app, CapCut.

As the launch date approaches, the social media industry will be watching closely to see how Edits performs and whether it can successfully fill the void left by CapCut’s absence.
