Instagram Rolls Out New Features to Enhance Direct Messaging Experience
Instagram has unveiled a suite of new features aimed at enhancing user interaction within direct messages (DMs). The popular social media platform is introducing live location sharing, customizable nicknames for friends, and an expanded array of sticker packs. These features are currently available in select countries, though specific locations have not been disclosed.
One of the key additions is the live location-sharing feature, allowing users to share their real-time location with friends in DMs for up to one hour. This functionality is designed to facilitate easier coordination at events such as concerts and social gatherings. Instagram emphasizes that location sharing is private, can be utilized in both one-on-one and group chats, and is disabled by default to ensure user privacy. This feature bears similarities to Snapchat’s popular SnapMap function.
Another notable update is the introduction of nicknames within DMs. Users can now assign personalized nicknames to friends in individual and group chats. The platform also offers the option to restrict others from altering one’s nickname. These custom monikers remain confined to specific chats and are not visible to users outside the conversation.
To further enrich messaging experiences, Instagram has launched 17 new sticker packs, introducing over 300 stickers. Users can mark their favorite stickers for quick access and reuse in chats. Additionally, the platform now supports the creation of custom stickers using cutouts or AI-generated options, providing a more personalized touch to conversations.
In a move that reflects shifting user behavior, Instagram is testing a new placement for the chat icon, relocating it to the bottom center of the app interface. This change is indicative of the increasing user engagement with messaging features compared to content creation.
As these features roll out gradually across different regions, Instagram continues to evolve its platform to meet the changing needs and preferences of its global user base.
