Google Doubles Down on AI at Pixel Hardware Event
In a surprising twist at its Tuesday event, Google shifted the spotlight from its anticipated Pixel hardware to emphasize its advancements in artificial intelligence (AI). Rick Osterloh, Google’s senior vice president of devices and services, underscored the company’s AI efforts, highlighting its potential to simplify life, boost productivity, and enhance creativity.
The tech giant stressed the importance of integrating AI into everyday devices, showcasing its progress in bringing AI capabilities to mobile platforms and the broader Android ecosystem. While the event was expected to focus on new hardware releases, Google instead highlighted its investments in its tech stack and Tensor chips.
Google revealed that six of its major products, including Search, Gmail, Android, Chrome, YouTube, and Google Play, now utilize Gemini AI models. The company also announced plans to extend its AI tools to other Android devices, such as those manufactured by Samsung and Motorola.
A key announcement was the introduction of Gemini Live, a tool designed for natural conversations, brainstorming, and interview practice. This feature is set to roll out for Gemini Advanced subscribers on Android devices.
When it came to hardware, Google did eventually unveil new AI-integrated products, including the Pixel 9, Pixel Watch 3, and Pixel Buds Pro 2. These devices boast features like Gemini responding to phone screen content and “Add Me” for group photos. The Pixel Watch now includes AI-powered pulse detection, while the Pixel Buds Pro 2 can interact with Gemini Live.
Looking ahead, Google teased upcoming AI features, such as the ability to share camera feeds during Gemini Live conversations, connect apps to Gemini Live, and create research reports by searching the web. These features are slated for release to Gemini Advanced users in the coming months.
Industry analysts view Google’s AI focus as a strategic move to gain a competitive edge against rivals Apple and Samsung. However, skepticism remains about the practical appeal of AI features and consumer trust in Gemini. As the tech world awaits the official launch of these new hardware products, questions linger about whether Google’s AI-centric approach will drive Pixel sales or boost Gemini Advanced subscriptions.
