Google Unveils Next-Gen Pixel Phones with Advanced AI Integration
In a surprising move, Google has unveiled its next generation of Pixel phones two months earlier than usual at an event near its Mountain View, California headquarters. The showcase highlighted the Pixel 9 series as a platform for demonstrating the latest advances in Android and artificial intelligence (AI) technology.
Rick Osterloh, Google’s senior vice president of devices and services, emphasized that the Pixel 9 phones are designed to be vessels for AI technology, making life easier and more productive for users. This approach aligns with industry trends, as Apple is also rumored to be integrating AI features into its upcoming iPhone 16.
The Pixel 9 series is the first generation of phones centered around Google’s Gemini technology. The Gemini assistant, designed to be more conversational with 10 human-like voices, can handle a wider range of tasks with access to email and documents. A special chip for on-device AI services enhances privacy and security.
During on-stage demonstrations, the Gemini assistant showcased its capabilities, offering helpful ideas for using invisible ink. However, it stumbled when asked about singer Sabrina Carpenter’s concert, highlighting the ongoing challenges in AI development.
One of the standout features is the Magic Editor, which uses AI technology to transform pictures. Users can add people or alter landscapes and backgrounds in photos, pushing the boundaries of mobile photography.
The advanced Gemini Assistant will require a $20 monthly subscription, though it will be free for one year with Pixel 9 purchase. The standard Pixel 9 is priced at $800, while the Pixel 9 Pro ranges from $1,000 to $1,100 depending on size. Google also introduced a foldable Pixel phone priced at $1,800. Shipping begins August 22, with wider availability next month.
Despite ongoing legal challenges to Google’s internet empire, including a recent judge’s ruling on its search engine monopoly, the company continues to innovate. Potential outcomes of upcoming court hearings could include spin-offs or deal restrictions.
In addition to the Pixel 9 series, Google announced the next Pixel Watch and wireless earbuds, targeting Apple’s popular products in the wearable technology market.
