Google Discontinues Nest Protect and Nest x Yale Smart Lock
Google has announced the discontinuation of two popular smart home products: the Nest Protect Smart Smoke and CO alarm and the Nest x Yale smart door lock. This decision comes as part of the tech giant’s strategy to refine its product portfolio and build a universal platform for device makers and developers in the smart home sector.
The Nest Protect, launched in 2013 with a second-generation model following in 2015, has been a favored choice among smart smoke alarms. However, recent availability issues have plagued the device. Google is now partnering with First Alert to introduce the First Alert Smart Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarm as a replacement. Priced at $129, this new alarm will be available in the US and Canada, offering interconnectivity with existing Nest Protect devices through Google’s Weave / Thread protocol and connecting to the Google Home app via Wi-Fi.
Existing Nest Protect users can expect continued security updates and functionality through the device’s expiration dates. Google plans to migrate Nest Protect management from the Nest app to the Google Home app, ensuring a seamless transition for current users.
The Nest x Yale smart door lock, introduced in 2018, will also be phased out. Google has collaborated with Yale to develop the Yale Smart Lock with Matter as a successor. Priced at $170, this new lock is designed to integrate with Google Nest video doorbells and will be compatible with any Matter-compatible ecosystem, operating over the Thread protocol.
For current Nest x Yale lock owners, Google assures that existing locks will continue to receive updates and function as expected. The company plans to introduce new features, such as passcode management, as part of the transition from the Nest app to the Google Home app.
As Google refines its smart home offerings, these changes reflect the company’s commitment to innovation and improved customer service in the rapidly evolving smart home market.
