Google Expands Smart Home Controls in Gemini App
Google is rolling out an expanded set of smart home controls within its Gemini app, enhancing users’ ability to manage their connected devices. The update introduces a Google Home extension that allows for seamless control of smart lighting, thermostats, speakers, and other devices linked to a user’s Google account.
The new features include natural language commands and the capability to handle multiple requests simultaneously. Users can now issue intuitive commands such as “The sun is too bright in the living room” to close smart blinds, demonstrating the system’s ability to interpret and act on contextual instructions.
One of the key improvements is the ability to execute multiple requests in a single command. For instance, users can adjust several lights throughout their home with one instruction, streamlining the control process.
The update also introduces device status inquiries, allowing users to check on the state of their smart home equipment. For example, one could ask if the porch light is on. Additionally, non-sensitive devices like lights can now be controlled from the phone’s lock screen, increasing accessibility.
Media and thermostat controls have been enhanced within the Gemini app. Users can adjust volume, pause, and resume media on smart speakers, displays, and TVs without leaving the app. The thermostat control design has been updated to align with the Google Home interface, providing a more consistent user experience.
For security-related actions involving cameras and locks, the system will automatically open the Google Home app. This is an improvement over the previous functionality, which merely linked users to the Google Home app for these actions.
The Google Home extension is part of a significant update to Gemini, aimed at improving its ability to perform complex tasks across multiple apps. Users can access the integration by signing into Gemini with their Google Home account and enabling the extension.
The rollout of these new features begins today and will continue over the coming weeks, gradually becoming available to all users.
