Framework Pivots to Desktop: AMD Processors Debut as Laptop 16 Plans Stall

Framework Shifts Focus to Desktop, Laptop 16 Future Uncertain

In a recent event, Framework, known for its modular and upgradable devices, unveiled its new Framework Desktop while notably sidelining updates on the previously announced Framework Laptop 16. The company, which had garnered attention for its ambitious Laptop 16 with upgradable graphics cards, has now redirected its spotlight to other product lines.

The event saw Framework introducing AMD processors to both its Desktop and original 13-inch laptop models. However, the Laptop 16, which had been a centerpiece of a prior San Francisco event, received minimal attention. The only new feature mentioned for the Laptop 16 was the “One Key Module,” designed for custom electromechanical keyboards.

Despite shipping the M.2 adapter bay in December, allowing for additional SSDs or peripherals in place of a discrete graphics card, questions linger about the Laptop 16’s future. Particularly, there is uncertainty surrounding new mainboards and chips for the device.

Framework CEO Nirav Patel assured that the company has not abandoned the Laptop 16, stating, “We are not finished with the Laptop 16.” However, Patel stopped short of confirming future GPU upgrades or additional features such as a snap-on secondary battery. The company continued shipping preordered Laptop 16 units through mid-last year.

The challenges faced by Framework in delivering on its promise of upgradable GPUs are not unique in the industry. Competitors like Dell/Alienware have encountered legal issues over similar commitments. Framework has yet to confirm GPU upgrades despite repeated inquiries, leading to speculation that the company may be reconsidering the Laptop 16’s design and features.

As Framework navigates these challenges, the tech community watches closely. The success of the Laptop 16 and the company’s broader vision for upgradable devices hinges on their ability to deliver on ambitious promises in an industry where such innovations have proven difficult to implement.

While hope remains for future upgrades, the current lack of concrete assurances leaves many questions about the direction of the Laptop 16. As Framework continues to evolve its product line, the fate of its most ambitious laptop remains a topic of keen interest in the tech world.
