Stellantis Unveils Plans for Solid-State Battery Dodge Charger Daytonas by 2026

Stellantis, the multinational automotive manufacturing corporation, has announced plans to launch a demonstration fleet of Dodge Charger Daytonas featuring solid-state battery technology by 2026. This initiative aims to pave the way for commercially available solid-state electric vehicles (EVs), offering lighter and more energy-dense power sources.

The Dodge Charger Daytonas will be built on Stellantis’ STLA Large EV platform, designed to support a variety of vehicles beyond the Chargers. If successful, this technology could be adopted by other Stellantis brands, including Maserati and Jeep.

The vehicles will utilize semi-solid-state batteries, which incorporate liquid electrolytes. This hybrid approach offers benefits such as reduced weight and increased range, although it still carries some fire risk associated with traditional lithium batteries.

Factorial, the battery supplier for this project, claims their technology can increase EV range by up to 50%. The company’s semi-solid-state batteries are compatible with existing lithium-ion battery manufacturing processes, potentially reducing production costs.

While Stellantis moves forward with this technology, other companies in the industry have faced challenges with solid-state battery development. Nissan and Fisker have adjusted or abandoned their solid-state battery plans, while Volkswagen has reported progress with endurance tests for its batteries.

Global efforts and investments in this technology are increasing. Hyundai and Mercedes are investing in Factorial’s semi-solid-state technology, with Mercedes planning to have these batteries in EVs by 2026. Honda and Toyota have also announced their solid-state battery plans for later in the decade.

In China, IM Motor has already launched a semi-solid-state battery EV, the L6, in April. MG, a sister brand, plans to introduce a similar vehicle in Europe next year, indicating growing interest and investment in semi-solid-state technology globally.

As the automotive industry continues to evolve, the success of Stellantis’ Dodge Charger Daytona project could mark a significant step forward in EV technology and performance.
