The world of the wealthy is an exclusive one, and South Africa has its fair share of members. Three individuals in particular have made a name for themselves as some of the wealthiest people on the planet. As we look at 31 January 2023, these three South Africans are among those with staggering amounts of wealth.
First up is Nicky Oppenheimer who tops this list with an estimated net worth of 7 billion dollars. He began his career working in mining before becoming chairman and later deputy chairman at De Beers Consolidated Mines Limited – a diamond mining company founded by his family many years ago. His investments across various industries have seen him become one of South Africa’s most successful businessmen over time, earning him a place amongst the world’s richest people today.
Next up is Patrice Motsepe whose fortune stands at around 2 billion dollars according to Forbes estimates from 2021-2022 financial year records. He started as a lawyer but soon moved into a business where he established African Rainbow Minerals which deals in platinum, gold, and other minerals found within Southern African countries like Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, etc. His success saw him become the part owner (alongside former president Nelson Mandela) of SANRAL, the South African National Roads Agency Limited, which is responsible for the management and maintenance of the country’s national road network.
