Recent data suggests that ChatGPT is making significant inroads in the online search market, with a survey revealing an increase in its usage from 1% to 5% among respondents. According to brokerage firm Evercore ISI, millennials are at the forefront of this adoption trend.

While Google remains the dominant player in the search market, its share has seen a slight decrease from 80% to 78%. This shift, though small, is noteworthy given Google’s longstanding control over online information access, which is crucial for its advertising business – a major source of revenue.

Despite holding a relatively small market share, Microsoft’s Bing generates substantial revenue, underscoring the value of search market control. ChatGPT’s growth, powered by generative AI technology, now presents a potential challenge to Google’s established dominance.

In strategic moves to enhance its market position, OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has launched a full search feature and secured a deal with Apple, increasing its visibility on iPhones. These initiatives directly compete with Google’s search offerings.

A comparative analysis by Evercore analysts revealed that ChatGPT outperformed Google in several areas, including learning new skills, writing, coding, and productivity. Notably, ChatGPT also led in product and pricing research satisfaction, potentially threatening Google’s comfortable position.

However, Google is not standing still. The tech giant has introduced Gemini and AI Overviews, which have been well-received by users, enhancing the search experience. A significant 71% of Google users reported finding these AI tools more effective than previous search methods.

Interestingly, the increased search activity among users of both ChatGPT and Gemini appears to benefit both Google and OpenAI.

Google’s stronghold in commercial searches, particularly for products like iPhones and insurance, remains intact. The observed decline in market share is likely attributed to general information queries rather than commercial searches, which helps safeguard Google’s revenue growth.

For ChatGPT, capturing even a small share of the search market could prove lucrative, with estimates suggesting that a 1% share could be worth approximately $2 billion annually. However, monetizing search queries as effectively as Google remains a significant challenge for ChatGPT in the near term.

As the search landscape continues to evolve, the competition between traditional search engines and AI-powered alternatives is likely to intensify, potentially reshaping user experiences and market dynamics in the coming years.
