AT&T Fiber Customers Get Free Internet Backup: Seamless Connectivity During Outages

AT&T Introduces Free Internet Backup Feature for Fiber Customers

AT&T has unveiled a new feature called Internet Backup, designed to provide seamless connectivity for its fiber customers during service disruptions. The innovative solution automatically switches from wired internet to cellular via a nearby smartphone, ensuring uninterrupted internet access.

The Internet Backup feature will be available at no additional cost for AT&T Fiber customers who also have an eligible unlimited postpaid wireless plan. This move positions AT&T competitively in the market, offering added value to its existing customer base.

Next week, AT&T will begin rolling out the feature through a software update to its BGW320 Wi-Fi gateways. Customers using different hardware may need to upgrade their equipment to access this new functionality. Users will receive a notification through AT&T’s Smart Home Manager app to activate the feature.

The setup process is designed to be user-friendly, with the Smart Home Manager app guiding customers through each step. Once activated, the system can switch to cellular data within two minutes of detecting a fiber service disruption. It will automatically revert to fiber service once the connection is restored.

AT&T has implemented safeguards to ensure the feature’s proper use. Internet Backup will deactivate if customers cancel either their AT&T fiber or cellular service, switch to a limited wireless plan, or delete the Smart Home Manager app. Additionally, the feature requires power for the Wi-Fi gateway to function.

This development comes as competitors like T-Mobile offer similar solutions. T-Mobile’s Home Internet Backup plan, priced at an additional $30 per month for 130GB of 5G data, uses a gateway router that connects directly to its cellular network. In contrast, AT&T’s offering leverages existing customer equipment and plans, potentially providing a more cost-effective solution for many users.

As internet connectivity becomes increasingly crucial for work, education, and entertainment, AT&T’s Internet Backup feature represents a significant step in ensuring reliable service for its customers. The coming weeks will likely reveal more about customer adoption and satisfaction with this new offering.
