iPhone 16 Launches Without Key AI Features, Marking Shift in Apple’s Strategy
The highly anticipated iPhone 16 officially hits stores on Friday, but early adopters may find themselves facing an unexpected compromise. Despite being touted as the “first iPhone built for Apple Intelligence” by CEO Tim Cook, the device will launch without its most hyped AI features immediately available.
This marks a significant departure for Apple, a company traditionally known for delivering cutting-edge features at launch. The tech giant is joining the AI hype train, but with an incomplete feature set that will roll out gradually over the coming months.
The Apple Intelligence Suite, announced at WWDC in June and highlighted during the September iPhone 16 launch event, includes a range of AI tools such as rewriting assistants, article summarizations, photo object removal, and audio transcription. While these functionalities already exist in the market, Apple emphasizes its focus on privacy, promising not to share user data.
However, the feature rollout schedule reveals significant delays. While the iPhone 16 went on sale on September 20, AI features are only promised to start launching in October. Initially, only a handful of features will be available, and exclusively in U.S. English. This poses challenges for Apple, which relies heavily on international markets. More complex AI features like visual search and Image Playground are slated for next month, with additional language support beginning in December and extending into 2025.
Compatibility extends to the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, which will also gain access to Apple Intelligence. However, the rollout gaps and delays may impact user upgrade decisions, potentially leading to a wait-and-see approach among consumers.
Looking ahead, Apple’s AI features could become more useful with third-party app integration, a prospect more relevant for the future iPhone 17. Industry analysts suggest that Apple is building for long-term opportunities, asking buyers to take a leap of faith with the current iteration.
As the iPhone 16 hits shelves, it remains to be seen how consumers will respond to this new approach from Apple, balancing the promise of future AI capabilities against immediate feature availability.
