Amazon Developing Smart Glasses for Delivery Workers, Sources Say
E-commerce giant Amazon is reportedly working on a new project to equip its delivery workers with smart glasses, according to sources familiar with the matter. The initiative, known internally as “Amelia,” aims to enhance navigation capabilities and enable package delivery confirmation through image capture.
The proposed smart glasses would allow delivery personnel to carry more packages by freeing up their hands, potentially increasing efficiency in the crucial “last mile” of delivery. However, the project faces significant challenges, including battery life limitations and the need for precise location data.
While the launch timeline remains uncertain, this development aligns with Amazon’s ongoing efforts to innovate and improve delivery safety and efficiency. The company has previously ventured into consumer-facing smart glasses with its Echo Frames, which feature Alexa integration but lack cameras or displays.
Amazon’s push for technological advancements in delivery extends beyond wearable devices. The company plans to implement AI to optimize package delivery in vans by 2025 and has already significantly increased its same-day and next-day delivery capabilities.
This initiative comes as Amazon faces ambitious delivery targets and evolving worker expectations. The company’s quick delivery times have been attracting customers to order everyday items, prompting the opening of new facilities to support same-day deliveries.
As the project develops, it remains to be seen how these smart glasses will impact the delivery landscape and whether they will successfully address the challenges of battery life and location accuracy. Amazon has not yet commented on the “Amelia” project or its potential implementation timeline.
