AI Startup Founder Charged with Fraud in $6 Million LAUSD Contract
Joanna Smith-Griffin, the founder of AI startup AllHere, has been charged with identity theft and fraud in a case involving the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) and investors. Prosecutors allege that Smith-Griffin misled both the school district and investors about her company’s financial status and misused company funds for personal expenses.
The charges stem from a $6 million contract between AllHere and LAUSD to develop an educational chatbot named “Ed” for student use. According to court documents, only $3 million of the contract was paid before irregularities were discovered.
Prosecutors claim that Smith-Griffin inflated AllHere’s financial worth to attract investors, misrepresenting the funds raised for the company’s educational chatbot technology. Additionally, she is accused of using company funds for personal purchases, including a house and wedding expenses.
The “Ed” chatbot was launched in March as part of students’ toolkits but was taken offline shortly after due to emerging issues with the company. This swift removal has raised questions about the vetting process for educational technology contracts.
Stephen Aguilar, an expert from the University of Southern California, commented on the case, noting the pressures startups face to overpromise. However, he also emphasized that responsibility lies with the school district for proper oversight of such contracts.
LAUSD Superintendent Alberto Carvalho strongly condemned Smith-Griffin’s alleged actions, describing the situation as a “house of cards” that deceived many. Carvalho stated that the district intends to protect its rights and is exploring the possibility of reviving the Ed chatbot project.
As legal proceedings against Smith-Griffin continue, the case highlights broader implications for AI use in education and the need for increased accountability in educational technology contracts. The LAUSD is now considering how to move forward, potentially reviving the chatbot project while implementing stricter oversight measures.
This case serves as a cautionary tale for school districts nationwide, emphasizing the importance of due diligence when partnering with technology startups in the rapidly evolving field of educational AI.
