Giving Baby Mice This Drug Makes Them Live 10 Percent Longer

Researchers from Harvard Medical School, MIT, and MIT conducted a study on mice. The immunosuppressive drug rapamycin is already used in clinical settings to facilitate organ transplants, and is even used to treat certain cancers. After 45 days of treatment, the mice who were given the drug lived longer than those who weren’t. And importantly, their lives weren’t just longer, but the drug appeared to actually slow aging down in male mice. Researchers also tested the drug on an invertebrate called daphnia magna, with which the drug found similar anti-aging success. Of course, humans are not mice, so it’s unclear whether our species might benefit in a similar way (some people are already taking it with the goal of living longer. . . .
