The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) has joined the growing ranks of media outlets experimenting with artificial intelligence (AI) by introducing AI-generated summaries for its articles. These summaries, appearing as “Key Points” boxes above the article body, are not explicitly labeled as AI-generated, with the disclosure hidden in a dropdown menu.
This move highlights the increasing adoption of AI technologies in journalism, as news organizations seek to enhance reader engagement and streamline content production. The WSJ’s approach involves using AI for various tasks, including article summaries, data-driven investigations, translations, and audio versions of articles.
Taneth Evans, head of digital at WSJ, revealed that the organization is conducting A/B tests to evaluate user needs regarding summarization. The process involves collaboration between the newsroom and technology teams, with ongoing reader engagement throughout the development.
While the specific AI model employed by WSJ remains undisclosed, the organization has committed to transparency by stating its intention to disclose AI usage in journalism when applicable.
The media industry’s embrace of AI tools continues despite concerns about factual reliability. Some organizations, like CNET, have faced criticism for using AI to write entire articles, resulting in errors. In response, more cautious outlets are limiting AI use to supplementary tasks, such as article summaries.
USA Today, for instance, has implemented AI-generated summaries labeled as “AI-assisted.” Meanwhile, The Washington Post and The New York Times are exploring AI applications for various editorial tasks.
However, the use of generative AI models in journalism raises concerns about potential hallucinations or fabricated facts, posing risks to editorial integrity.
