Wordy App: Learn English While Streaming Your Favorite Shows and Movies

New App ‘Wordy’ Revolutionizes English Learning Through Entertainment

A groundbreaking iOS app called Wordy is set to transform the way people learn English while enjoying their favorite movies and TV shows. Developed by Budapest-based indie developer Sándor Bogyó, Wordy automatically translates and defines unknown words during viewing, offering access to over 500,000 titles including popular series like HBO’s “The Penguin” and Disney+’s “Agatha All Along.”

Bogyó created Wordy out of personal frustration with constantly pausing shows to look up unfamiliar phrases. Inspired by the Chrome extension Language Reactor, he recognized the need for a mobile solution that could be used while watching TV or using a computer.

The app’s functionality is straightforward yet powerful. Users select an episode from Wordy’s extensive library, and the app’s AI analyzes subtitles, extracting and lemmatizing each word. A custom speech recognition model identifies spoken sentences from TV or computer audio, allowing the app to follow along with the episode in real time.

As users watch, Wordy scrolls through the transcript, highlighting difficult words and providing quick translations at a glance. Each episode concludes with a summary page, sorting words by difficulty levels ranging from Beginner to Proficiency English. Users can save words to their Library and practice with digital flashcards.

Wordy’s technology combines proprietary and third-party AI models, utilizing TMDB for film and series data and the OpenSubtitles.com API for accurate subtitles. Testing with Netflix’s “Wednesday” demonstrated the app’s accuracy and ease of use.

Currently available only in English, Wordy has ambitious expansion plans. Spanish language support is slated for November, with French and German to follow. The developer emphasizes a focus on quality and accuracy for each language integration.

Priced at $2.99 per month or $29.99 per year, Wordy is now available on iOS, with an Android version launching in November. This innovative app promises to make language learning more accessible and enjoyable for entertainment enthusiasts worldwide.
